Most likely, however, if this was for a high qiality print output, the second Chesterfield chair bumpy upholstery would be visible on the wall on the left. Ican see it there - thats all

I think that for the web-view the second effort is quite acceptable. If the pic was to be produced in high resolution, for example for printing on large format, then the block of black could come out as unnatural and it would be much better to use some combination of gentler methods - cloning, burning and the use of one or two other tweaking tools. Trial and error is usually quite a safe approach to achieve the desired final image. Let me know if you use Photoshop (which I am more familiar with than other tools) and I will prompt you to what I use for checking whether I am moving in the right direction using the trial and error approach.
